Joan of Arc - Maid of Heaven

The Song of Joan of Arc
By Christine de Pisan
Stanza 57

As for the rest of you rebel towns,
all who have renounced your lord,
and who swore allegiance to another
may you accept peace and be restored,
gratefully receiving his pardon.
For if force is used against you all
the gift of forgiveness will come late
or worse it may never come at all.

Original in French

Et vous, toutes villes rebelles,
Et gens qui avez regnié
Vostre seigneur, et ceulx et celles
Qui pour autre l'avez nié,
Or soit après aplaniè
Par doulceur, requerant pardon!
Car se vous este[s] manié
A force, à tart vendrez au don.1
